Like most longer bullets, a higher rate of twist is favored for better accuracy. Meaning even though the velocity isn’t there, the extra mass should help with terminal ballistics. On the other hand, the bullet weight is about double that of a standard. I suggest you go to and to see what others may have found to use to make their ARs cycle with a subsonic load. It uses a round nose 100 grain bullet and is expensive. There is a company selling 223 ammo that is subsonic and will cycle an AR. Very quiet using Trail Boss or Tight Group but it didn't even budge the bolt.This was with 55 grain bullets. I did a few subsonic loads for my son's AR with a AAC SPR/M4 suppressor. I would suggest that as you work up loads, do them without the suppressor to make sure the bullets are stabilized, if you don't you run the risk of a baffle strike which could ruin the suppressor.
You will need to use the heaviest bullet you can find that will still stabilize in your barrel at about 1000 fps. If you are shooting an AR 15 and want a subsonic load that will cycle the action, it is going to take a lot of work.
